Pitfalls and Pearls of Penile Prosthesis Surgery – Summary:

Brian S. Christine, MD, reviews the history of penile implant surgery. He then demonstrates critical steps, correct technique, and precautions to avoid intraoperative complications in scrotal and infrapubic placement of inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP).

Abstract:

Introduction

Inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) surgery is a particularly effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED), either with or without concomitant Peyronie’s disease. The history of penile implants dates back more than a century, with the most significant innovations credited primarily to Drs. Brantley Scott and Hernan Carrion.

Purpose

This presentation concentrates upon the 3-piece IPP and the surgical approaches commonly employed in order to place the device. For instance, the AMS 700™ from Boston Scientific and Titan® Touch from Coloplast are among currently available IPP devices. The three most common of these surgical approaches are scrotal, infrapubic, and subcoronal incisions. Each of these techniques have benefits and drawbacks for the patients as well as for physicians. This presentation then includes image and video demonstrations of critical steps and correct technique involved in these surgeries. The demonstrations also describe intraoperative “safety checks” to help the surgeon recognize and address problems that arise during the procedure.

About Innovations in Urologic Practice

Innovations in Urologic Practice (IUP) is an annual CME-accredited conference devoted to updating urologists on the rapidly changing healthcare environment. Topics focus on innovative diagnostic and treatment strategies, controversies, new and currently developing technologies, and challenges in today’s urologic practice. Dr. Taylor presented this lecture during the 23rd IUP in 2018. Please visit this page in order to learn more about future IUP meetings.
