Summary:

GRU Contributing Editor Neil H. Baum, MD, Professor of Urology at Tulane Medical School, shares how to enhance referrals from other physicians and non-medical sources. Developing relationships with referring physicians form a key pillar in building a successful practice. Dr. Baum discusses how prompt replies make it more likely for physicians to continue referring to your practice. He also gives tips on how to improve the communications process with referrers, how to manage possible interruptions, and when to update them on patients they referred. Dr. Baum suggests that specialists send out a newsletter to referring physicians to keep them updated on changes or developments to their specialty, as well as to introduce themselves to new physicians who start practicing in their area. He also notes the importance of non-medical referrals and how to enhance these relationships. Finally, he emphasizes that, although gifts are not usually a main reason for someone to give a referral, if they are used they should be memorable.
