New Paradigm for the Treatment of Peyronie’s Disease – Summary:
Culley C. Carson III, MD, Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, reviews the history of treatment options for Peyronie’s Disease. He then compares clinical results of oral therapies, injection techniques, shock wave therapy, and penile prosthesis. Since first being developed, the efficacy of several of these protocols has improved and patients have experienced a reduction in curvature. Patients with Peyronie’s Disease often report significant negative emotional toll as a result of the condition, and new advances in treatment, such as the combination of drug and lengthening device that improves penile angulation can also improve depression and emotional problems.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Culley C. Carson III, MD, FACS, FRCS (Hon), is the Emeritus Rhodes Distinguished Professor in the Department of Urology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Carson completed his medical degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine and his residency in general surgery at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Following his surgical residency, he joined the United States Air Force and spent two years as a flight surgeon. He then completed his urology residency at the Mayo Clinic before joining the faculty at Duke University Medical Center.
In 1993, Dr. Carson became the Rhodes Distinguished Professor and Chief of the Division of Urology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focus is on men’s health, including penile prostheses and treatment of erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease. He has published over two hundred peer-review publications and edited seven textbooks.
Dr. Carson is active in a number of professional associations, including as President of the American Society for Men’s Health and Congress President for the International Society of Men’s Health. Dr. Carson serves on the editorial boards of BJU International and Postgraduate Medicine and is also Editor-in-Chief of Sexual Medicine Reviews and Associate Editor for both the Journal of Men’s Health and Trends in Urology and Men’s Health Journal.
Dr. Carson has been consistently recognized by his peers as among the Best Doctors in America in Urology. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sexual Medicine Society of North America in 2014 and also received the St. Paul’s Medal from the Council of the British Associates of Urological Surgeons. He received the American Urological Association’s Brantley Scott Award in 2012 and their Distinguished Contributor Award in 2011.
