Richard J. Boxer, MD, FACS, Clinical Professor of Urology in the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, discusses the use of cannabis in the urology practice. Dr. Boxer describes how cannabis works and dispels many of the myths associated with its use. He delineates the safe use of cannabis and its specific urologic applications, emphasizing the role it can play in pain management and nausea from chemotherapy for urology patients, among other debilitating ailments. He also highlights the important role cannabis can play as an alternative to opioid use, which he points out are misused by 11 million Americans. Dr. Boxer concludes that cannabis is safe, is not a gateway drug, and that it may serve an important role in some urologic applications.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Richard J. Boxer, MD, is a Clinical Professor of Urology in the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a national leader in healthcare and cannabis policies, and is also an international leader in telemedicine. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees with high honors from the University of Wisconsin and completed his training at UCLA in urology. He has been a health policy adviser to the White House, Health & Human Services Secretaries, Senators, Representatives, and Governors. He was appointed to the boards of the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Diabetes, Kidney, and Digestive Diseases. As a private citizen, he has represented the US at the World Health Organization. He was a finalist for Surgeon General of the US in 1997 and 2001 under the Clinton and Bush Administrations. Dr. Boxer has had op-eds recently published in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, JAMA, Harvard Business Review, and numerous medical journals on health policy, cannabis, the opioid crisis, and veterans’ issues. He has published 73 articles in medical journals, as well as 14 book chapters, and has delivered 65 invited lectureships. Dr. Boxer helped create the telemedicine industry in the private sector 15 years ago, bringing health care to millions of Americans. He is now the Chief Medical Officer of iAnthus, which has cannabis licenses in 11 states. He has a deep and broad understanding of the telemedicine and cannabis industries and is a consultant, speaker, thought leader, and author.
