ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Christian G. Chaussy, MD, HonFRCSEd, is a Professor of Urology at Universität Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany. Dr. Christian G. Chaussy studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, and spent several years as staff member at the Institute for Surgical Research at the University of Munich, where he did research in the field of transplantation. In 1975, during his residency at the University of Munich, he began (together with Ferdinand Eisenberger and Bernd Forssmann) the pre-clinical and clinical research for Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL). At the Institute for Surgical Research, in 1980, he performed the first ever ESWL treatment on a patient. In 1981, he became Professor of Urology at the University of Munich. In 1984, Dr. Chaussy accepted a position at the University of California, Los Angeles, as Professor of Urology and Head of the Stone Center. He left in 1986 to accept the position of Chairman of the Department of Urology at Harlaching Hospital in Munich. He retired from that position in February 2010. In 1996, he helped pioneer the use of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. Dr. Chaussy has received many awards, including the “Ritter-von-Frisch” Award of the German Urological Society (DGU), the “Distinguished Contribution Award” of the AUA, the “Lifetime Achievement Award” of the Endourological Society, and the “European Science” Award and the “Innovators in Urology” Award of the EAU. He is an honorary member of several national and international surgical and urologic societies, including the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, the Medical University of Beijing, and the EAU Section of Urolithiasis. For 20 years, he was President of the German Lithotripsy Society, of which he is now the Honorary President. Dr. Chaussy was the Scientific Chairman of the 27th World Congress of Endourology in Munich. In 2012, he was President of the Endourological Society.
